Chopard, founded by Louis-Ulysse Chopard in 1860, is a luxury watch, and fashion accessories company. Chopard watches are well-known for their accuracy and precision combined with elegant designs. Because of their accuracy, Swiss railway, which is punctual in train schedules, acquired the Chopard watches.
A watchmaker and goldsmith called as Karl Scheufele, took over the company in 1963. Paul-Andre Chopard, the last watchmaker of the family had to leave the business as his sons, following other careers, were not ready to look after his business. Paul-Andre had no other option other than selling his business to Karl Scheufele, who as the new owner of Chopard, gained significant experience in jewelry making and watchmaking. Scheufele added the jewelry segment into the company’s watch production.
In 1975, the company started producing jewelry and ladies’ timepieces, whereas in 1976, the company presented the Happy Diamonds collection. Chopard opened its boutiques in Geneva, Hong Kong and Vienna in the 1980s. The cooperation was established by the company with an open-road endurance race known as Mille Miglia and developed Mille Miglia timepiece every year. In 1993, the Chopard Happy Sport collection was introduced. In 2000, Chopard introduced L.U.C Quattro watch which provides 9-day power reserve and marked the beginning of a new millennium. In 2002, Chopard enlarged the jewelry range with the Golden Diamonds concept. The Chopard introduced the Happy Spirit collection in 2003.
In 2005, the company presented the Golden Diamonds and the Copacabana and introduced the L.U.C. Lunar 1. The company holds three production sites situated in Pforzheim, Fleurier, and Geneva and has opened more than 90 boutiques. The company distributes its products through 13 subsidiaries which are placed all over the world. By 2007, the U.S. has Chopard boutiques in Beverly Hills, Costa Mesa, New York City, Palm Beach, Bal Harbour, Puerto Rico, California, Old San Juan and Florida.
The Chopard Company has made variety of watch collections, including mechanical timepieces, technically complicated models, sporty ones, gem set, etc. Some of the famous Chopard collections are: L.U.C., Haute Horlogerie, Your Houre, Classiques, Happy Spirit, La Strada, Happy Sport, Happy Diamonds and Mille Miglia.
Chopard has helped a number of foundations and taken part in many charitable events. The company has continuously cooperated in fighting against AIDS along with Sir Elton John who established the Elton John AIDS Foundation in 1993.
